President Donald Trump hailed a Japanese company Tuesday for providing tire plugs for American citizens, despite concerns over how the technology could be used in China.
“The tire plug is very, very popular,” Trump told reporters at the White House, praising the plug as a tool that “could be used by anyone.”
“And they can put it on the back of their cars,” he said.
“The Japanese company is really, really doing a fantastic job, and we really appreciate it.”
Trump said that the plug could also be used for road-safety measures such as using the plug on the side of vehicles.
“It’s a very popular product in Japan, which is a very safe country, which has a very good safety record, but you have to be careful with it,” Trump said.
Trump, speaking to reporters at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, was speaking after a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The two leaders met last month at the G20 Summit in Germany, and both have expressed support for Japanese companies working to secure a US-Japan trade deal.
